Grosse Pointe Woods Coach Who Embezzled $10 Million for Pain Pills Gets Home Confinement

Brandon Johnson is the former CEO of his family business, GTJ Consulting. He's also the assistant varsity baseball coach at University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods. Now, he's also a convicted criminal who faces six months home confinement.

Johnson somehow avoided federal prison Monday after admitting he embezzled more than $10 million from his family-owned company and blew the money on pain pills while cheating on his taxes, reports Robert Snell of the Detroit News. He pleaded guilty to two counts of subscribing and filing false tax returns. 

In an interesting arrangement, Johnson, 45, of St. Clair Shores, will not begin his sentence at home until after spring and summer baseball season. He'll also serve three years' supervised release and pay more than $4.8 million restitution to the IRS.

The prosecution had recommended a 25-month sentence.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Leitman credited Johson with overcoming an opioid addiction.

"You have done a tremendous amount of work to overcome an addiction that brought you here," Leitman told the tearful Johnson, according to the News.
