Passionate Bluegrass Broadcaster Larry McDaniel, Longtime WDET Host, Dies At 72

January 05, 2013, 6:26 AM

Facebook page says McDaniel "started his music hosting experience while in the U.S. Navy." It also quotes a 2002 comment he made to mark the show's 25th anniversary:

"Bluegrass is our music. It’s American. It’s like blues or jazz. This music is about roots."

Metro Detroit admirer Lynn Bruce, a drummer, reacts to the death on Facebook:

"What I liked about him was the down-home way he would go into detail about the band or musician before and after he played a cut explaining interesting facts about the recording."

Another tribute, posted at Bluegrass Today, comes from friend and collaborator, Dan Blatter:

“Larry was instrumental in organizing the WDET Bluegrass Festival which turned into a multiyear music festival for the station. He was also a great supporter of the New Tradition concert series . . .

His broadcast professionalism, support of bluegrass music, booming voice and good-natured personality will be greatly missed.

Cause of death and funeral arrangements have not been announced.
