Free Press: Snyder's Choice For EM Is Kevyn Orr, A U-M Law Grad

March 12, 2013, 6:40 AM

Kevyn Orr, a partner in the prestigious Jones Day law firm of Washington, D.C., is Gov. Rick Snyder’s leading choice to become Detroit’s emergency financial manager, report Tom Walsh, Matt Helms and Joe Guillen of the Free Press.

The story carries a mild caveat: The appointment will take place assuming Snyder decides to go forward with proposing an EFM after today's hearing on the Detroit City Council’s appeal in Lansing.

Sara Wurfel, Snyder’s press secretary, would not comment on what she called “rampant speculation” about EFM candidates. However, several people with knowledge of the search process told the Free Press that Orr, 54, a University of Michigan graduate and business restructuring specialist who represented Chrysler in its 2009 bankruptcy, is the top choice.

The sources, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity surrounding Detroit’s fiscal crisis, said Snyder and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing have discussed the city’s challenges with Orr. Bing and Snyder met with privately with Orr late last month in Washington, D.C., where Snyder had been attending a National Governors Association meeting.
