The basics and a masculine vibe have created an empire of sorts for Chad Johnson, founder of Lady Jane's Haircuts for Men. The Troy-based hair salon has grown from a single St. Clair Shores shop in 2005 to 44 locations at the end of 2012, Karen Dybis writes in The Detroit News.

And Johnson said he plans on opening another dozen sites this year, expanding beyond the Midwest and into states including Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Alabama and Florida.

Lady Jane's exudes a masculine vibe. Maybe it's the leather recliners in the lobby, sports memorabilia covering the walls or the high-definition plasma televisions throughout the salon. Or it could be the attractive female stylists, whose beauty has earned the chain the nickname of "Hooters for Haircuts."

The clean-shaven CEO also is eager to expand the more feminine side of his business, LUV Manicure & Pedicures. The three-year-old subsidiary just opened its 13th location in Novi last month. Johnson said he has three to four more LUV locations in the works, mostly in Michigan. The chain's other locations are in Ohio and Illinois.
