Detective Joe Geddes

Sunday marks the seventh episode for AMC's new Detroit cop show "Low Winter Sun."

After tonight there are only three more episodes for the rookie season. Not everyone is hooked on the show; the verdict is mixed so far.

Tonight could be an exciting episode. In the previous one, the Greek mob guys kill Poppa T, a gang member hooked up with Rev. Low Down. And Detective Frank Agnew hooked up with fellow cop Dani Khalil. Was it just a flash in the pan hook up? Or is there something more to it?

As in the past several weeks, Deadlines Darrell Dawsey, Jeff Wattrick and Allan Lengel will be live blogging the show.

We'd love to hear what you think as well.

Jeff: So, I think it should be said before the show starts: This has got to be the make or break episode. No more potential or set ups. If there isn't any serious action tonight, I'm done with the show.

Darrell: Same here.

Jeff: I like that low angle shot from the perspective of the wino laying on the street.

Allan: Interesting twist with Frank Agnew executing the search warrant.

Jeff : On Dani's case right?

Allan: I like the exchange in the interrogation room. Good Stuff

Allan: Looks that way. But they're trying to say the person who killed her guy killed the cop.

Jeff: Wow. After that scene, I can assure you that I'll tell a cop wh

Darrell: Waterboarding the man in a piss-filled toilet? OK?

Allan: The bathroom scene. Now we're talking. Real police work.

Darrell: OK!

Darrell: I'd have figured a hardened criminal would've asked before he was dragged out of the interview room for the plunge.

Jeff: Fair point.

Jeff: That's what I've been waiting for!

Darrell: That scene was the first time I've had any kind of a visceral reaction to anything in the show.

Jeff: It's also an interesting parallel to the way Agnew and Geddes killed McCann in the first scene.

Darrell: So dude hasn't even asked for a lawyer yet?

Jeff: If I just got a piss swirly, I might be leery of antagonizing the cops by pressing for my rights.

Darrell: Maybe it's me, but this show seems so sparsely populated. At times, it feels like the main characters are the only people who work at 1300 Beaubien. Nobody walking by? No other office mates? Same goes for the bar and the streets. I dunno. Maybe it's some statement about perceptions of Detroit as ghost town?

Allan: Joe Geddes is interviewing an actor who grew up in suburban Detroit.

Jeff: It seems like they did a good job putting local actors in the secondary roles.

Allan: Yes, Poppa T was local.

Allan: Some good interrogation. Playing them off each other.

Jeff : This is the most engaging episode so far.

Allan: I agree. It's moving. It's got some energy and intrigue.

Darrell: The web is tightening, at least a bit. Long overdue.

Jeff: In the 1920s the Soviets couldn't afford raw film so their aspiring filmmakers learned their craft by reediting Birth of a Nation. I want to do that to the first episodes.

Darrell: Heh. I'd like to re-edit Birth of A Nation myself......couldn't do worse than the original...and I'm sure you couldn't do worse than the first five episodes of LWS.

Jeff: Now he wants a lawyer!

Darrell: Geddes is playing it to the hilt. And now he wants to lawyer up?? This is where I can forgive the bad Detroit accent and even the thin characterization. Lennie James is a bad motherfucker!

Jeff: Ok, Geddes is an evil genius. He scuttles the case so they can assume he killed McCann without being able to prove it/make it stick.

Darrell: I'm glad they didn't insult the Dani Khalil character. I liked how she let Frank off the hook for the hook up.

Allan: I agree Darrell. Also, yes, Joe Geddes had a great performance going after that guy, helping set up the frame.

Allan: Where's douche Romeo?  Nice line.

Jeff: Khalil isn't buying it the frame. White ethnic quasi-ganster with a hockey rink? Who could Skelos be in real life?

Darrell: Illitch.

Jeff: Wrong hockey rink. But this boat scene looks like it'll be epic.

Allan: It's nice to see some different scenes besides bombed out buildings and graffiti. The hockey rink. Geddes house. Yes, the boat scene, too.

Darrell: Just kidding about Illitch. And yeah, I liked the boat scene for the same reason. Makes the city seem like it might actually be inhabitable in places.

Allan: Exactly. They haven't done a very good job on that front.

Darrell: Yeah. It's definitely a jaded view of Detroit. A cop's view, I'd argue...which makes sense, of course, but still, it's ugly.

Jeff: I hope we see more of Geddes neighborhood because those east riverfront communities make a compelling backdrop.

Frank Agnew

Allan: Yes, he's supposed to be living on Klenk Island off Alter Road.

Darrell: Nice shot.

Darrell: Geddes is an eastsider? Makes sense. That point about Klenk reminds me of how little they've done with these characters...at least until now. Wish they'd done a better job of mixing in back story.

Jeff: Ok, Geddes motives are clear but why did Agnew kill McCann again?

Darrell: Anger over what Geddes led him to think McCann did to Katya, right?

Allan: Nice line "you polished your badge" in reference to Agnew having sex with Khalil

Darrell: Agreed, Allan, nice line...But now Khalil is "dirty" because she boned Agnew? Not sure I follow that logic from Geddes.

Allan: Agnew thought McCann killed his prostitute girlfriend

Jeff: Ok, right.

Allan: Agree with that. She's stand up.

Darrell: That IA guy is way too polished for this town. Sorry, DPD, but you know it's true..That ain't Gary Brown, that's for sure.

Jeff: He feels more like a Fed.

Darrell: IA feels more like a New Yorker.

Allan: Agree IA ain't Detroit.

Darrell: Even the locally bred feds I've met don't come across like that. Not that I've met many.

Allan: Worth coming back guys?

Jeff: I think so. If only to see if Agnew and Geddes make it back to shore before the boat sinks!

Darrell: I'm at least mildly interested now, whereas before I was just annoyed at having to step away from Grand Theft Auto V. I think I'll watch again.

Allan: I like that scene of Agnew passing Damon on the street. Nice shot.

Jeff: Good use of 1300's architecture.

Darrell: "There was a girl." Nice ending.

Jeff: The pictures over the renderings was cool too.

Allan: Wow, IA isn't buying any of that.. I thought it was more intriguing when he didn't have the exact story and the motive

Darrell: Dawsey: Not a lot of action this episode either, but I can honestly say I liked it. The story's moving along now, and they're finally fleshing out some of the characters in a real way.

Jeff: I have to say, this episode lived up to the expectations.

Allan: I have to say I liked it. There was a lot of action, a lot of emotion and good acting.

Jeff : It's worth slogging through the first 6 to get to this point.

Darrell: We'll agree to disagree on the action, but I'm with you on the emotion. And definitely the acting. Lennie James brought his A game with this one.

Jeff: The acting has been strong throughout the series. The narrative  structure was much improved tonight.

Allan: Lennie James is good.

Darrell: OK, guys, well I guess we'll be back for at least another week. See you then.

Jeff: We didn't care when Poppa T was killed, but I'm invested in what happens to Geddes, Agnew, and Khalil at least.

Allan: Agree, Jeff. See everyone next week.

Jeff: For sure.
