Day In The Life Of Detroit: West-Side Fire Is A Spectator Sport

September 26, 2013, 7:54 PM

We set out Thursday with a plan to photograph people and places on Livernois for another installment of our Day In The Life series. But we were sidetracked by the massive fire in an old building at Pittsburg and Martin.

So, like a good section of the neighborhood, we spent the afternoon watching the Detroit Fire Department contain and extinguish this fire that looked like a scene from "Backdraft" . . . minus Alderman Swayzak and the montage set to adult contemporary music.

We'll get back to Livernois next week, we promise. In the meantime, here are some images from Thursday's west-side fire.

The spectators were all fine and dandy until the wind shifted, causing an adjacent field to momentarily light up. The crowd moved back a few feet and took pictures, of course.

This pole nearly caught on fire, too.

The building was an abandoned warehouse with no direct contact with other buildings, and firefighters worked on containing the massive blaze, not just eliminating it. No one was hurt in the fire.

Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles.

The firefighters watched, too.

Even Highland Park showed up to help!
