Police Chief Craig Opens Internal Investigation Regarding Cushingberry Citation

January 10, 2014, 11:16 AM

Police Chief James Craig made an appearance on Fox 2's "Let It Rip" Thursday night to talk about his new plan for crime reduction in Detroit. Naturally, he was pressed about the Cushingberry ordeal as well.

City Councilman George Cushingberry was issued a citation for a failing to signal Thursday after leaving a restaurant. Officers observed an open alcohol container and a strong whiff of marijuana when they approached the vehicle, but Cushingberry was not arrested.

Chief Craig told Fox2 that the police department is conducting an internal investigation into the supervisor who dealt with the citation, but is not investigating Cushingberry for potential crimes.

"The councilman was legally stopped by Detroit police officers. He was cited and released. We conducted an evaluation of the stop. I made a decision early on that we were going to open an internal investigation into the supervisor," Chief Craig said.

"So the councilman's done?" Charlie Langton asked.

"It's done," Craig responded, adding "We're dealing with some other issues... and more to come."

Chief Craig also said that an officer would not have been required to speak with a supervisor in order to arrest an elected official and that he was unable to discuss details about what occurred at the scene.
