NBC's Touching Story of Melvindale Parents and Their Desire to Go to Sochi

It's a heartwarming tale of human generosity, family and small-town America.

Jessica Smith, 30,  a speed skater from Melvindale, is all set to compete in the winter Olympics in Sochi.

And Harry Smith of NBC reports that her mom, Reina Smith and dad RIck Smith and brother Travis wanted to come see her compete in Sochi. The only problem was that the trip was very costly: About $40,000. That's $40,000 they didn't have for a trip.  Mom cuts hair. Dad is a truck driver.

Harry Smith reported that the town's people gave them money for their trip. They held a spaghetti dinner at the Legion Hall and a raffle at the ice rink.

But they still came up short on cash.

Then friends started spreading the word via Facebook. And before you know it, strangers were giving money and suddenly, the family had enough to go to Sochi.
