Disney Cartoon Features a Future Detroit Ruled By An Evil Billionaire

June 17, 2012, 8:36 AM

Detroit is the setting of a new Disney cartoon -- "Motorcity" -- whose plot centers on a dictator who has banned personal freedoms -- including cars.

And the shoreline of Lake Erie is a theme park.

(You can watch an episode here.)

"Motorcity" airs Thursdays on the Disney XD channel, found in the extended channels on most cable/sattelite subscriptions.

The series, according to Wikipedia, is set in a fictional, futuristic Detroit, called Detroit Deluxe, which is an elevated metropolis built over the old Detroit.

It is owned by evil billionaire Abraham Kane (Mark Hamill). Ruling the citizens under strict laws, and banning personal freedoms including automobile transportation, Kane now faces one last obstacle: a group of hot-rod wielding rebels who call themselves the Burners. Led by Mike Chilton (Reid Scott), the Burners rise to stop Kane from conquering Detroit’s last oasis of freedom—an underground refuge dubbed Motorcity.

The leader of the Burners and the main protagonist of the series is Mike, an  impulsive 17-year-old who used to work as the evil billionaire's cadet before Kane's cruelty drove him to fight against him as a Motorcity rebel.

The creator is Chris Prynoski, an animator who has numerous  many TV and film credits, including Metalocalypse on Cartoon Network and his own creation, the series MTV Downtown, which was nominated for a primetime Emmy Award, plus such animated television commercials as the "Foot Long Hot Dog Inventor" spot for Budweiser.
