Elrick: Cops Reissue Cush's Ticket And Scramble Again To Explain What Happened

March 04, 2014, 10:45 PM

The saga of George Cushingberry's January traffic stop has taken another sudden turn, and the Detroit Police once more are scrambling to explain what happened after Fox 2's M.L. Elrick raised questions.

Cushingberry's traffic citation, which was recently dismissed, will be re-issued, Capt. Anthony Topp of the Detroit Police tells Elrick. The ticket was originally issued during a controversial traffic stop involving Cushingberry, the No. 2 person on the Detroit City Council.

After an investigation, Chief James Craig said a supervisor on the scene failed to follow proper procedure after marijuana and alcohol were found in the car, but Cushingberry received only a ticket for an improper turn.

The ticket was subsequently dismissed when no Detroit police officer appeared in court. Chief James Craig explained on Friday that officer was assigned to a new precinct and the subpoena was mailed to his old post.

Elrick, though, discovered the officer had been working at the new precinct for months before the ticket was issued. Police are now saying they don't know where the notice to appear in court was sent.
