Fox 2: Mob Beats To Death Dad At West-Side Detroit Gas Station

April 07, 2014, 12:30 AM

For the second time in less than a week, Detroit Police are scrambling to solve a crime involving a violent beating by a mob.

This time, the victim died, Randy Wimbley reports on Fox 2.

The victim is Eric Miles, 38, the father of two, who died after having been beaten and run over by a car at a west-side Valero gas station.

"He was beat up, and he was crushed from the waist down,"  said Emerald Bulley, a friend. "Terrible death. You don't even do an animal like that."

Wimbley said it is unclear what prompted the attack.

Police are looking for two persons, though Wimbley said witnesses said several others took part in the violence.

The gas station beating follows an attack Wednesday on the east side that left a suburban man in a medically induced coma, fighting for his life.

A group of a dozen or more people beat Steve Utash, a 54-year-old suburban tree trimmer, who had stopped at Morang and Balfour after his pickup truck hit a 10-year-old boy who appeared to have stepped into the street. The boy was not seriously hurt, and police said Utash was not at fault.

Police took a 16-year-old and 17-year-old into custody Saturday and urged the other participants to turn themselves in.

The beating that killed Miles took place at a familiar location for crime in Detroit. Numerous incidents over the past year, including carjackings, robberies and assaults, have taken place at gas stations.
