Neal Rubin: They're Running Out Of 313, Detroit's Iconic Area Code

April 22, 2014, 5:34 AM

Neal Rubin reports in the Detroit News that the end is probably in sight for Detroit's iconic area code.

So long, 313, the unofficial Detroit brand that decorated billboards, T-shirts, graffiti, even a food trailer in Austin, Texas -- Via 313 -- that advertises "authentic Detroit-style pizza."

Writes Rubin:

Pending a revised estimate next week, the last of the 313 telephone prefixes is expected to be handed out four years from now, in the second quarter of 2018.

But still: The 313 is coming to an end. Better start designing some new graffiti.

A fresh area code will most likely be laid atop the iconic, palindromic 313, which has become synonymous with the grit and the cool of the D.

Ryan Hooper tells Rubin that no matter which new area code will supplement 313, Motor City fans will always be able to get a 313 T-shirt at Pure Detroit.

“For us, 313 definitely represents the lifestyle. It’s the cool way of letting people you know you’re from the D,” says Hooper, creative director for the Detroit retail chain.
