Let the Games Begin: Some Question Warren Evans' Residency

April 24, 2014, 7:34 AM

The political games have begun.

WDIV's Mara MacDonald reports that some political operatives are trying to say that ex-Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans should be disqualified as a candidate for Wayne County Executive because he failed to meet a residency requirement.

But MacDonald's report points out that the operatives appear to be off base. Evans filed his papers on Monday, the day before the filing deadline.  He also changed his address that day from Washtenaw County to an apartment in Detroit.

MacDonald reports that anyone filing for county office must be a registered voter in the county 30 days before the filing deadline.

But attorney Mark Zausmer, Evan's attorney,  tells WDIV the rule for county executive candidates is different. He says candidates must be a resident of the county 30 days before the election. The primary is in August.

MacDonald reports that Evans thinks this is nothing but a bunch of noise.

Evans joins a crowded field including Robert Ficano, who announced he is running for re-election.  -- A.L.
