Wayne State Med School Grad Among Those Killed at Afghan Hospital

April 24, 2014, 2:35 PM

A Wayne State University med school graduate, who had worked at the Detroit Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital of Michigan, was among three doctors shot and killed Thursday at the Cure International Hospital in Kabul.

USA Today, citing NBC news reports, reported that E. Jerome (Jerry) Umanos, was among those killed. He graduated from WSU med school in 1982 and did his pediatrics residency at the Detroit Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

“This is a terrible tragedy for his family and for the people of Afghanistan who Dr. Umanos was helping,” said Valerie M. Parisi, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., dean of the WSU School of Medicine, according to USA Today. “While I did not know him personally, it is clear from where he was and what he was doing that Dr. Umanos shared the spirit of helping those who need it most, which is a hallmark of our students.”

An Afghan security guard, who was supposed to be protecting people at the hospital, opened fire and killed three American doctors, including a father and son who were visiting.

Another doctor and a U.S. nurse were wounded in the attack, USA Today reported.  -- Allan Lengel
