In the religious community, Sunday is often considered a day of rest, a time to attend church, to nourish the soul, to reflect,  to escape momentarily, from the craziness and sometimes harsh realities of society.

But yesterday the harsh realities of society seemed to impact some churchgoers at two churches in Detroit.

In one incident, Fox 2's Erika Erickson reports that a 27-year-old man wielding a hatchet showed up on the porch of  Citadel of Praise church on Lyndon after a morning of worship.

An off-duty cop came outside to help out and the man attacked the cop, striking him with the hatchet in the leg, He was not hit with the blade, Fox 2 reports.

The officer responded by opening fire and striking the man, who was in critical condition.  Fox 2 reports the officer was not seriously hurt.

Then at another location, Highland Park Police Chief Kevin Coney s 2006 Cadillac Escalade was parked in front of the Rise Tabernacle Church on Livernois in Detroit.

While he was inside, someone broke into his car,  WDIV's Hank Winchester reports.

Missing: His high-powered assault rifle.

The chief was parked there from around 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  -- Allan Lengel
