For some media, covering the state's GOP convention this weekend came with a surprise slight: Press badges that tagged them as part of the "Whitmer Protection Team."

Recipients of the dubious distinction Saturday at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids included the Detroit Free Press columnist tweeting above and Detroit News state politics reporter Craig Mauger.
Word is reporters who asked why they'd been labeled in such a way were told it was to incentivize them to be more honest.
Several online commenters cried fascism.
"At least it wasn't a star of david. baby steps."
The label was printed on the back of the badges or on a separate tag.
