State Sen. Coleman A. Young II's campaign continues to get more contentious as the Nov. 7 election approaches.

During last week's televised debate, Young accused Mayor Mike Duggan of being corrupt. He  also called for voters to take back the "motherland," a reference to blacks reclaiming power from the white mayor in a predominantly black city.

The latest Young campaign ad, more than two minutes long, uses a vintage black and white video of Malcolm X to trash "white liberals," aka Duggan and black community leaders who support the mayor.

Malcolm X died in 1965 at age 39.

The video (below) was created by a group called "Detroit for Revolution NOW."

On Facebook, Young writes about the latest campaign ad:

"Malcolm's words are very prophetic and true. STAY WOKE and Vote on November 7th."

Young has made it clear throughout the campaign that he sees highlighting race as one of the key paths to victory, and that a white mayor can't effectively serve a predominately black city.

The video ad begins with the words: "Stay Woke Detroit, Listen to Malcolm."

The term "stay woke" is slang for keep informed "of the shitstorm going on around you," according to Urban Dictionary.

"I think there are many whites who act friendly toward Negros," Malcolm X says in the TV interview. "A fox acts friendly toward the lamb and usually the fox is one the one who ends up with the lamb chop on his plate."

The state senator's ad then flashes the words: "What he said then, still applies NOW!"

"If you study the structure of the Negro community, economically, politically, civically, psychologically and otherwise; it's controlled by the white liberal who usually poses as the friend of the Negro," Malcolm X continues.

As the civil rights figure goes on to talk more about the "fox," pictures flash of wealthy executives such as Dan Gilbert and Roger Penske.

Malcolm X then says:

"I'm suspicious of whites who join Negroes and always have to be in the lead . . . who always have to be the head, who always have to be at the top in Negro organizations."

The ad then shows Duggan interacting with black people.

Malcolm X goes on to refer to some black leaders as "puppets" and "parrots" who "have been put in front of the Negro community by white liberals."

At that point, the video flashes photos of prominent African American leaders in the community, including Rev. Wendell Anthony, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon and Police Chief James Craig, all of whom are supporting Duggan for re-election.

Duggan continues to run positive ads that talk about his accomplishments and vision. The ads don't acknowledge Young.

Young trails significantly in the latest poll by Target Insyght, 65 percent to 24 percent. He lost support after last Wednesday's combative debate.
