Oakland County issues mask order as court ruling threatens Whitmer's

October 04, 2020, 9:55 AM

Oakland County has issued its own mask mandate after the Michigan Supreme Court struck down Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's emergency powers Friday, throwing into question what would become of the various pandemic safety orders she's issued.

The order from County Health Officer Leigh-Anne Stafford requires residents to wear masks or face coverings when they leave home. Additional orders on things like bar and restaurant capacity and employee health screenings could be forthcoming.

Stafford cited a Michigan law that gives local health officers broad license to respond to an epidemic, including by limiting public gatherings.

Her order requires masks in indoor public spaces and outside when people can't maintain a six-foot distance from one another.
