The Federal Transit Administration is doling out $41.6 million to the Detroit Department of Transportation for much needed improvements in the city's ailing bus system.
The money will be paired with an additional $10 million in local and state money for a total of nearly $52 million.
Funds will be used for a "mid-life bus overhaul" on 60 vehicles, purchasing security equipment, improving facilities and installing bus shelters, according to the Detroit News.
$6 million is pegged to make improvements to the Rosa Parks Transit Center downtown.
The Detroit Department of Transportation has been riding the struggle bus through a decline in passengers, an increase in expenses and serious safety concerns.
